Leather Crafting

Leather crafting or simply leathercraft is the practice of making leather into craft objects or works of art, using shaping techniques, coloring techniques or both. The only type of leather suitable for carving is vegetable tanned, full grain leather. This is because the vegetable tanning process allows the leather to absorb water, which is used to soften the leather before the carving process, and the grain of the leather is necessary to allow the leather to hold the shape after the carving process is complete. Other leathers lack these two essential qualities.

The other tools are punch-type implements struck with a wooden, nylon, metal or rawhide mallet. Leather stamping involves the use of shaped implements stamps to create an imprint onto a leather surface. This is a form of artistic expression and many in leather crafting world consider it an artform. The stamping is generally performed by using specially designed leather stamps that are struck with a mallet.

Leather Containers and Holders

Here we refer to the leather products you can use to carry or hold other items. They come in the form of bags or any kind of holders. The lady’s handbags as a matter of fact represent a significant portion of the leather product market. It’s not just a simple carrier item but a symbol of social status. When we talk of containers and holders.

Kokopelli

Kokopelli is one of the most intriguing and widespread images surviving from ancient Anasazi Indian culture. He is depicted as a humpbacked flute player, and is widely believed to bring well-being to the people. He was the one who would change the seasons and bring about a good harvest. Almost universally however, he was regarded as a harbinger of fertility, assuring success in hunting, growing crops, and human conception.

The Anasazi, who were first to claim Kokopelli, were primarily farmers who grew corn, beans, and squash on the Colorado Plateau. They regarded Kokopelli as a fertility symbol and he was always welcomed during corn planting season. A visit from Kokopelli insured that a good harvest was in store.

According to Navajo legend, Kokopelli was the God of Harvest and Plenty, a benign minor god who brought abundant rain and food to people. The Zuni also regarded him as a Rain Priest, able to make it rain at will. Others regarded him as a Spiritual Priest with actual healing powers. Many different legends exist about what Kokopelli actually carried in his sack. In Pueblo myths, he carried seeds, babies, and blankets.

Kokopelli embodied everything pure and spiritual about music. He and his magical flute traveled from village to village bestowing gifts and spreading cheer to all whom he visited. His flute was said to symbolize happiness and joy. When he played his flute, the sun came out, the snow melted, grass began to grow, birds began to sing, and all the animals gathered around to hear his songs. His flute music soothed the Earth and made it ready to receive his seed. The magic of his flute was also thought to stimulate creativity and help good dreams come true.

Sasquatch

Sasquatch is a purported ape-like creature said to inhabit the forests of North America. Many dubious articles have been offered in attempts to prove the existence of Sasquatch, including anecdotal claims of visual observations as well as alleged video and audio recordings, photographs, and casts of large footprints. Tales of wild, hairy humanoids exist throughout the world, and such creatures appear in the folklore of North America, including the mythologies of indigenous people. Sasquatch is an icon within the fringe subculture of cryptozoology, and an enduring element of popular culture.

The majority of mainstream scientists have historically discounted the existence of Sasquatch, considering it to be the result of a combination of folklore, misidentification, and hoax, rather than a living animal. Folklorists trace the phenomenon of Sasquatch to a combination of factors and sources including indigenous cultures, the European wild man figure, and folk tales. Wishful thinking, a cultural increase in environmental concerns, and overall societal awareness of the subject have been cited as additional factors.

Other creatures of relatively similar descriptions are alleged to inhabit various regions throughout the world, such as the Skunk ape of the southeastern United States; the Almas, Yeren, and Yeti in Asia; and the Australian Yowie; all of which, like Sasquatch, are engrained in the cultures of their regions.

Nefertiti

Neferneferuaten Nefertiti (1370 BC – 1330 BC) was an Egyptian Queen and the Great Royal Wife (Chief Consort) of Akhenaten, an Egyptian Pharaoh. Nefertiti and her husband were known for a religious revolution, in which they worshiped one god only, Aten, or the sun disc. With her husband, she reigned at what was arguably the wealthiest period of Ancient Egyptian history. Some scholars believe that Nefertiti ruled briefly as Neferneferuaten after her husband’s death and before the accession of Tutankhamun, although this identification is a matter of ongoing debate. If Nefertiti did rule as Pharaoh, her reign was marked by the fall of Amarna and relocation of the capital back to the traditional city of Thebes.

Eye of Horus

The Eye of Horus, also known as wadjet, wedjat or udjat, is an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection, royal power, and good health. The Eye of Horus is similar to the Eye of Ra, which belongs to a different god, Ra, but represents many of the same concepts. Funerary amulets were often made in the shape of the Eye of Horus. The symbol “was intended to protect the pharaoh in the afterlife” and to ward off evil. Ancient Egyptian and Middle-Eastern sailors would frequently paint the symbol on the bows of their vessels to ensure safe sea travel. The eye symbol represents the marking around the eye of the falcon, including the “teardrop” marking sometimes found below the eye.

L. Paquin & Fils Inc. (1955-2010) Memories of a General Store

Ludger Paquin was born in 1900 in Escanaba, Michigan. The family came to settle in Saint-Jovite (now downtown Mont-Tremblant) in 1903. At the age of 14 he took a job at E. GAUTHIER, the village general store. Built in 1895 by Léandre Gauthier, the business was subsequently left to Léandre’s son Édouard en 1912. Ludger quickly won his boss’s trust and Mr. Gauthier gave him more and more responsibility, including the correspondence and the purchase of merchandise.

In 1925, Ludger married Anne-Marie Bedard. They had five children: Jeannine in (1926-2020), Yvette (1928-1946), Jean Louis in (1931-2013), Jacques in 1935, and Pierre in 1943. Édouard died suddenly in 1954 and in 1955, Ludger Paquin became the owner of the business and gave it his name.

A young man of the village, Jean-Guy Ouimet, hired by Édouard, bridged the gap between the two administrations. He spent ten years in the company before launching a 25-year career in the police force, after which he returned to work in the business for another 20 years.

If I remember rightly, Ludger was a part of my father’s circle of friends. Despite the large age gap, they shared passions such as the fishing club “La Sauteuse”, organized on Gaston Gervais’s initiative for their group of hunting and fishing enthusiasts.

You could find just about everything in the store: flour, sugar, canned goods, tools, clothing, leaf tobacco…. It was also a community gathering place and I remember going there with my father and being fascinated by this Ali Baba’s cave. Ludger’s children helped out in the store, of course, but each of them chose their own path. After studying at HEC, Jacques took over the family business when his father died in 1975.

The Paquin & Fils customers were an eclectic lot. There were locals, naturally, but also people from nearby villages convinced they could find what they needed here. Tourists, too, were fascinated by this old-time store with its inventory as comprehensive as it was diverse. Year in year out they came to find what they needed for hunting and fishing.

Because they spoke only French, the employees had the brilliant idea of creating an exhaustive bilingual catalogue to deal with the language issue and thus meet the needs of the Anglophone customers. L. Paquin & Fils Inc. also had a social role to play. It was there that you went to get the latest news and chat with the people you ran into.

Entering the store – a relic of a bygone age – felt comforting. From floor to ceiling there was up-to date merchandise, but also heritage items we didn’t realize were still being produced. Sometimes outdated things that made you smile suddenly became indispensable.

I remember, for instance, having to ask Jacques (alias “Le Blond”) to find some ski equipment from the ‘40s for Tremblant’s 60th anniversary. Sure enough, he had it in stock.

With its wood-crafted facade, the building’s architecture raised as much curiosity as it did admiration for a lost aesthetic. Its appearance at the time was so remarkable that it was included in Louise Sigouin’s book Les commerces immortels du Québec (Québec’s immortal businesses) whose preface, written by the late Serge Bouchard, said: “The new fashion, the real, consists of capturing the true face of the old. Not to ponder, but to use.”
